Plus, this thing repeats, Windows will try to run the same update later, and probably, you will experience the same thing many times…! Method #1 – Windows Update Troubleshooter

 

To fix it, there are many ways to actually fix it, but we are going to share the most simple way. The most simple way to fix it is to use Windows Update Troubleshooter. Here is the website link to the Troubleshooter. It is provided by Microsoft for resolving any Windows update problems.

If you go to the link, Microsoft provides Windows Update Troubleshooter for Windows 10, 8, and Windows 7. Download the right version for your Windows. In our case, we are downloading the Windows 10 troubleshooter. Here is how the program looks like:

To go ahead, just click “Next” button. This program will now scan for any Windows update related issues on your computer. If it detects problem, it will show you a problem and a recommended solution or action to fix the current issue.

On our Dell Precision M4800 workstation laptop with Windows 10, it found there are some pending updates to be done. If you have any other issues with updates like the “failure configuring windows update reverting changes”, this will find out the problem and fix!

Method #2 – Check and repair hard drive errors with CHKDSK

 

If the above method did not work for you, here we have one more thing to try. CHKDSK utility. If there are errors on your system drive, this “Failure configuring windows update reverting changes” could happen to your machine. So, let’s check for any errors on your system drive, and fix it! Here is how to do it:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. type chkdsk /f /r c:
  3. Note that c: must be your system drive letter. If your system drive letter is e, then you need to type e:
  4. You probably need to restart your PC to run chkdsk utility, say Yes to run chkdsk utility when you restart your PC.
  5. As you restart your PC, this chkdsk utility will start a scanning and it takes some time. Wait until it finishes.
  6. Now, apply your Windows Update and see if it works this time.
