Step 2 was the lifesaver and it worked. This problem happened after installing the IE8 update so I think windows update was the main culprit for this issue. Might have installed some updates that killed the workstation services.

Gotta say thanks! Step 2 did the trick, though after uninstalling it was no longer available to reinstall until after a restart.

AD is back, drives are mapped. All is well. Thank you for saving the day.

It showed up today after a restart of the server (Windows Server 2003). Option 2 resolved the issue. Thank you for publishing the info and being a resource.
