“the user profile service failed the logon” error message when logging on to Windows 7 or 8.

Here is the solution to resolve the user profile service failed error message issue when logging on to Windows 7 or 8. Follow the steps below to figure it out.

 

01. Go to Windows Start Menu -> Run -> Type “regedit

02. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

03. Find the SID key (s-1-5-21 with a long number)

  • Ex. S-1-5-21-2145538215-9255732931-2900907521-1007
  • Ex. S-1-5-21-2119188215-9283922931-2933877521-1004.bak
  • Ex. S-1-5-21-8877519301-9527722931-2911927751-1004

04. If you have only one SID key with .bak, Right Click on that SID key and select Rename. Then Remove only .bak at the end of the number. Go to STEP 09.

 

05. If you have two SID keys one with .bak and one without .bak

  • Ex. S-1-5-21-2119188215-9283922931-2933877521-1004
  • Ex. S-1-5-21-2119188215-9283922931-2933877521-1004.bak

06. Right Click on the SID Keys without .bak and Click Rename. Then Add .bk at the end of the number and Hit Enter.

07. Right Click on the SID Keys with .bak and Click Rename. Then Remove .bak at the end of the number and Hit Enter.

08. Right Click on the SID Keys with .bk and Rename it to .bak (.bk -> .bak)

09. Select the SID Key without .bak and Double Click on the RefCount in the right pane. Type 0 to value data and then click ok.

10. Select the SID Key without .bak and Double Click on the State in the right pane. Type 0 to the value data and then click ok.

11. Close Registry Editor and then Reboot your computer. Check if you still get the error message while logging on.
