How to fix bootmgr image is corrupted Windows 8 & 10 & 7 & XP

Recently, on one of our laptop, we see an error message with a black screen: bootmgr image is corrupted. (this error can occur in variety of Windows: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10) The operating system is Windows 7, and it was Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. Not every time, but sometimes when we turn on the laptop, we see the above error message instead of Windows login screen. As soon as we see the error message, we thought the culprit is the hard drive inside the laptop. We did variety of scan and fixes to fix the problem when the computer starts to boot. Nothing did fix the issue except one method.

Have you tried all of hard drive scan & fixes, but did not solve the BOOTMGR problem ?

Fix 1 – Try to clean your computer memory or replace a bad memory

What did fix it ? In our case, it was the memory. (RAM: Random Access Memory) Did we replace a memory in the Dell laptop ? No. There were two RAMs, and we simply removed the memory cards, then we cleaned up the connection portion of memory with an eraser like the picture below. Like we told you, we have tried all other methods before this, and nothing worked. How to know which one is a bad one ? Let’s say you have two memory. (memory 1 & memory 2) Try to remove memory 1 and start the computer with memory 2 only. After that, try to remove memory 2 and start the computer with memory 1 only, and if one of two fails to boot, then you know which one is bad.

This is one of two RAMs from the Dell E6400 laptop.

After using eraser, we cleaned the connection point again with alcohol. (Just use eraser. It’s good enough)

We installed the memory again, and the bootmgr image is corrupted error was fixed. In some cases, it may be causes by bad memory. So, it some cases, you will need to replace memory, but for us, cleaning memory worked. If you are having the same problem like us, try to clean memory or try to replace memory first. 🙂 The bootmgr error sounded like a hard drive problem, but it was related to computer memory.

Fix 2 – If you see the message when installing Windows, check your USB media, or DVD and DVD Drive (When installing with DVD). Make sure they are working.

In our case, it was a memory, but according to other people, this BOOTMGR image is corrupt message may appears when you are installing new Windows. If you face the error when installing Windows, check your DVD and DVD drive. It could be a bad DVD or a bad DVD drive. Always when you burn DVD, it is good to burn at slowest speed instead of fastest speed. If you think your DVD drive is bad, then try to connect a external DVD drive, and try again.

Fix 3 – In some cases, it could be a dead CMOS battery

In some cases, low or dead CMOS battery on motherboard may cause the BOOTMGR IMAGE IS CORRUPTED message when it fails to load proper BIOS settings. CMOS battery keeps your motherboard configuration and time. It is located on your motherboard, and it is like a watch battery. Check if your CMOS battery condition is good, and if it is bad, try replacing the battery. How do I know if it is dead ? if your computer’s date and time are not up to date every time you turn on, it could be a sign of a dead CMOS battery. Also if it does not keep your own BIOS settings, it could also be a sign of a dead CMOS battery.

We hope this blog post is helpful for you.

Thank you!
